Why Are Suspenders Not Commonly Used in Business Anymore

Why Are Suspenders Not Commonly Used in Business Anymore

         Introduction

What was once a staple in every working man's

attire, suspenders largely have faded from daily

 use in the corporate world.

Their downfall generally came in the form of

cultural shifts, fashion trends, and practicality.

Now, let's explore the main reasons why it seems

like suspenders are no longer easy to find in

 business settings.

### 1. **Shifting Fashion Trends**

Suspenders have been among the major features

of male dressing from the latter half of the 19th

 to the mid-20th century.

They were quite crucial in holding one's trousers,

most especially when pants happened to be

 high-waisted.

The fashion trends, however, started shifting in

the 1960s as lower-rise pants came into place

and belts became rather pragmatic in holding

 trousers in their place.

As trousers started to become much more fitted,

over time, suspenders slowly fell out of fashion.

Belts became the forerunning accessories to

 compliment men's business attire.

Casualization of the work environment has

further contributed to the decline in using

suspenders. Formal business attire was just

about required for most of the corporate settings

 in the past.

As the workplace has grown looser with respect

to dress code over time, so too has the need for

 formal accessories like suspenders grown

 thinner.

These days, it is quite a common sight to see

business executives in business-casual attire in

which suspenders would feel too formal or out

 of place.

2. **Rise of the Belt**

Belts gained wider acceptance in the mid-20th

century with design changes to the men's

trousers. It was an age when trousers with belt

loops became everyday wear, and as such, belts

 suggested themselves as appearing more

 contemporary and streamlined than suspenders.

Belts are also generally more comfortable and

simpler to adjust compared to suspenders, and

thus were practical enough for common wear by

 many.

Belts are also easier and more minimalist, fitting

well with the modern businessman who favors

his sleekness and convenience above all.

As the world keeps looking for ways to save time

in every corner, so have belts become the

definite staple for holding pants up.

### 3. **Shifting Social Attitudes**

While suspenders in the past conveyed a sense of

sophistication and elegance, they have taken on

certain associations in the modern era that make

them less usable in business: for one, the

perception by many of suspenders as old-

fashioned, quirky, or even a bit eccentric.

Their associations with historical figures, with TV

characters like Larry King, and with sub-

cultures like hipsters and steampunk, have

further made them seem inaccessible or

 irrelevant to the regular businessperson.

Also, in modern business life, suspenders can be

judged as too stiff or even too traditional. In that

respect, they can easily give a picture of the

'olden' days, and hence, they are less socially

versatile, more neutral compared to belts.

4. **Comfort and Practicality**

For a number of people, suspenders are less

 comfortable as compared to belts.

While the weight of the pants is more evenly

distributed on the shoulders by the suspenders,

these have to be adjusted day after day and can

be a bit restrictive as well. Belts, on the other

hand, are simple and never a hassle to wear,

causing less irritation during the day.

Also, it might be difficult to wear suspenders

with a jacket since a jacket is supposed to be

worn in business as part of the standard

 dressing.

If one fails to adjust suspenders properly, this

may cause bunching or awkward pulling on

 shirt and pants.

Belts, on the other hand, come with a smooth,

unbroken line which works quite well with most

 business suits.

### 5. **Rising Fashion Subcultures**

Suspenders primarily fell off from mainstream

business attire but became common among

 certain fashion subcultures.

An example is that hipster fashion took on the

use of suspenders as part of the pseudo-vintage

or retro accessory of choice, but these were

mated with more casual or non-business attires.

Suspenders are also part of certain fashion-

forward circles or nostalgic style enthusiasts, but

these niches really are quite removed from the

 regular corporate environment.

### 6. **A Possible Revival?**

While they are no longer a staple in business,

 suspenders have not completely disappeared.

As with most things, what is old will again

 become new.

 Designers occasionally include suspenders in

collections, and some people make the accessory

 a signature piece.

But for the average businessperson, suspenders

are just not likely to regain their status as a

common accessory in the near future as comfort

and simplicity continue to be the primary focus.

### Conclusion

Suspenders have lost favor in today's business

world due to a host of reasons that include the

introduction of belts, a trend toward casual

attire, and a change in the way people perceive

things. While it is still a stylish and functional

choice for others, it has ceased to be part of

 business attire.

But because fashion is always in flux, as styles

will continue to change in the future, suspenders

may not be ruled out altogether. But for the

present time, the belt has become the

 indispensable complement in the modern

 business attire.
